The Sackler Family and the Opioid Crisis
The opioid crisis is, among other things, a parable about the awesome capability of private industry to subvert public institutions. That money will corrupt almost any institution, regulatory institutions. It does, and in this case, I was looking at the pharmaceutical industry. And on one level, my book is about the Sackler family doing some very bad things. But I think it's also about a whole circle of enablers, people like McKinsey consultants, and white shoe lawyers at fancy law firms who abet this kind of behavior.
