When William Henry Perkins purple becomes a commercial success, this inspires a whole lot of other chemists to kind of follow in his wake. Professor Hoffman who'd been incredibly scathing about mauvene actually sees this as a commercial success and creates his own version of an analine dye called rosene. It wasn't long before people started looking at other applications of the chemicals that gave rise to these colors. The initial discovery of movine also led to the discovery of saccharin.
