The Negative Effects of Foreign Policy on Relationships to Nation States
I think there's these image effects and spillover effects, which I talk about in the book. When the US supports or allies with a regime like say Saudi Arabia, it makes us seem like an enemy to countries that are not getting along with Saudi Arabia. And so that turns America into an enemy by association for some, but it also just leads to a backlash in the ideas. The idea of a liberal empire is a misnomer because you can't have a liberal empire because it's inherently illiberal. So many people around the world associate American capitalism with imperialism. One of the things that America has done is undermine those very things through its imperialism.
