His father and mother died when he was very young. Was brought up by rather puritanical scottish grandmother. Had a brother seven years older than himself, frank, who became the second old russell. He wrote in his autobiography that although he he loved the the parqisan park and the flowers that he saw blooming every spring, nevertheless, he felt acutely this loneliness living a household of very, very much older people.
