i used different systems depending on the medium. For print books, i started out with folding the pages. And then from then i progressed to writing in the margins. But then i found that that slowing down my reading too much. I really depend on having good reading momentum to finish a book. So you may have seen that these colored posted flags sometimes allow college students will use them till i label particular pages.
