The title of your thesis is Deep Probabilistic Graphical Models. When you were starting, would you have had any idea that this would be what you were focused on? No, I didn't know. Columbia Statistics, they have a very structured program. If you don't pass them, you'll get kicked out. So first year I focused on passing my quiz. Then took a course with my now two advisors, Dave and John Paisley. Those two courses are really what sparked my research into latent variable models.
