How Frederick Johnson Changed His Name to Johnson

In 1838 when he's about 20 years old, Frederick decides he's going to escape for obvious reasons. He was determined to join other escapees, including his aunt Jenny and Uncle Noah and the free north. Having failed one escape already, he was aided by Anna Murray, a free black woman who worked as a maid. Although he was nearly caught, he managed to get from Baltimore to Pennsylvania. Initially taking the new surname Johnson with an opting for Douglas upon moving to New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1841.
