Is This Just a Romantic Idealization?

We almost can't imagine anybody behaving this way, at least not under duress. This inability to imagine a world view different in any fundamental way from our own is at the root of the incomprehension that i mentioned at the beginning. A lot of people like to say that nothing was lost because none of this honor stuff, none of it ever existed. It was all just stories. I don't think so. Men like lawrence didn't think so and that's why they were so fascinated by what they found out in that desert. The question is, where that sense of loss comes from?
