Introduction
In 1961, a barbed wire barrier went up along the dividing line between East and West Berlin. It was designed to prevent those living in the communist east of the city defecting to the democratic West. Over the course of almost three decades, around 5,000 of them managed to escape. But how did this 27-mile mile long wall become such an enduring symbol of the Cold War? Paul McGann looks back at some of the key moments that helped make it happen.
