Art was seen to have social utility and if you wanted to move an audience or reader it was with some aim some ulterior aim to get them to do something art was instructive homiletic almost like a sermon okay so it's no wonder that we had morality plays spring up from this. Then the romantics came along and they saw in words' words poetry to be a spontaneous overflow of feeling to paraphrase and so suddenly art became expressive which gave rise to things like the flanera. So today we can work in all three traditions and indeed there are other things going on as wellthis is just in a nutshell.
