History is a very powerful thing to use in telling mathematical stories. I often use history as a way into a subject in the books that I tell, because I think non-mathematicians find historical narrative very easy to follow. So, to use history has been a very powerful ally. And I made a program for the BBC called the Story of Maths which was for one hour programs about the history of my subject. It's amazing. I learned things that I didn't know about my subject through making that program and it gave me new insights into my own subject.
