The Importance of Tone in Chinese

The Chinese writing system is such that because each word has its own character, the characters are all sufficiently different. This is just something we've had to solve for more phonetic writing systems like English. And definitely a lot less opaque than the changing the way you spell the vowels in a word. But also not necessarily the most practical thing as typing numbers every time you type a vowel so you can indicate what tones it has might get kind of tedious.
