Much of what we publicly know about australia's national security institutions, particularly our intelligence agencies, is based on the historical information that's contained in places like the national archives. So would it be fair to say that the national archives actually helps exercise a degree of oversight of security agencies? Or do you come to think about it a little bit differently? No, i think it's absolutely right. I mean, our intelligence community agencies are exempt from the provisions of the f o i legislation. And while there is various oversight mechanisms for our intelligence community, with parliamentary committees and inspector general of intelligence and security - they're not going to be able to access those records.
