The Rise and Fall of Magellan
Magellan's religious fervor seems to have overcome him. He forced the islanders to destroy their idols and denounce their gods. And then he threatened the local chieftains under Humabhan's domain, who didn't convert. A village on a neighboring island was burned by Magellan when the locals refused to convert to Christianity. It is a far cry from Magellan's initial steps when he said no one would be punished for not becoming a Christian. The mission was now more than just finding the spice islands.
