How to Make Eye Contact With Your Therapist

I've never been able to cry in front of people after all the childhood emotional neglect and emotional abuse that my parents caused. When we do small talk, I can look at my therapist, but the moment we start talking about anything serious, big or small, I have to look away. We're almost building that new muscle allowing you to make eye contact as things shift out of light-hearted into serious if there's a buffer zone. There's another comment on this as another follow up. Is that the goal to be able to eventually maintain eye contact? Especially my patients with trauma in their background. It's going to be more difficult. Am I going to push them to do it?
