Farmer Generals - The Scourge of France

Farmer generals collected between a third and half of the state's revenue in september 17 54. They sent their unfortunate debtors to prison, to the galleys, to the hangman's court. This relentless form of tax collection was enforced by the farmer generals for various indirect taxes on goods like salt, tobacco, soap, wine, playing cards. Of the 75 thousand tons of goods exported from paris and its surrounds, none of it went to southern france.
