The Second Day of the Fire
The Duke of York was fighting the fire in London on September 3, 1666. He and his men have been employed not in fighting the fire, but in controlling mobs which terrorise the ruined streets. As night descends on the second day of the fire, violence again erupts on the streets. James realises it is a bloodied man that he sees tied about the neck,. It's then that he follows the crude rope curling along the wall to pick up the body. The story ends with him dragging the corpse away from St Paul's Cathedral.
