The Battle of Cisicus
Athenians knew Cisicus well, as it was a prosperous city on the northeastern Anatolian coastline. It laid on a narrow isthmus which protected far out into the Propontus, the modern day Sea of Marmora. The previous year the Athenians sailed up to Cisicus to put down a rebellion. This operation, though, required much more secrecy and surprise so they needed to sail only under the cover of darkness.
