Introduction

In the early 1970s, gender integration in the U.S. workforce began to increase as women entered occupations that were primarily held by men. The trend suddenly stalled after several decades and shows no sign of resuming. A recent PNAS study investigated whether familial factors, in particular intergenerational transmission, were responsible for the observed stalling. Researchers found that fathers had a significant influence on the careers of their sons and daughters.
