The Toxic Threshold in Environmental Science
The idea of the toxic threshold has a curious history back through labor and sort of the internal space of factories. This first comes to public controversy in the buildup of World War I around chemical munitions. So very quickly that threshold idea moves out to sort of govern air quality in areas around the factory, then it sort of scales up to a much more sort of environmental crisis moment. The idea of thresholds really trouble our ability to confront that industry and hold it accountable for the destruction of the planet.
