Thinning of the blood vessels that you sometimes get with coved infection may be behind this. Some immune cells found there appear to be producing more chemicals that we know can be toxic to some brain cells. And autopsies have also found increase activity of microglea, and those are the immune cells of the central nervous system. But we still don't know yet if something similar is happening in the brains of people who have had mild infections - they could go on to develop long-term memory problems.
