Why Isn't There More Apprenticeships?
Tomaro jacoby examines why germany's famed apprenticeship programme might be hard to replicate. He argues that we need years of dedicated training inside the classroom before we can perform as knowledge workers. The most straightforward answer is simple economics - it's cheaper to sit students in a classroom than train them on the job. But if this is true, then how do we learn what we do? And i'd suggest that schools often get outsize credit for skills for two reasons. First, schools teach the highest level, easiest to articulate aspects of a profession. Second, schools are institutions. Learning by doing is not. So you can vote to fund or cut education, but not learning
