The term joshing, which is always capitalized, by the way. It shut up in 1845, 15 years earlier. What's likely is that Josh has been used as a generic name for a person. For women, we see Molly, which is just any girl. When someone writes a gag for a movie or a play, does that have anything to do with gagging someone stopping them from talking related or not?
