Is There a Trade-Off Between Capitalism and Labor Market Competition?

Workers are exploited under capitalism, but probably not as much as people think and capitalism itself has actually reduced a lot of exploitation. But that doesn't mean their living standards have declined or that they've risen just barely. So what I think my Marxist and socialist friends miss out and what I missed years ago is that market competition is actually beneficial to the workers.
