The Importance of Being a Black Child in the United States

In the 1940s, two psychologists designed a series of experiments known as the doll test. The researchers found that black children knew that they were different and had lower status. One of Kitty's earliest memories has to do with exactly this. When she came to Los Angeles, her self-esteem was very low. She enrolled in public speaking class and started attending a modeling school.
