The Importance of Whitfield in the American Revolution

Whitfield died in 1770, six years before the Declaration of Independence. How do we place him in terms of the revolutionary times and even the American Revolution? I think he was a very British person and understood the importance of the British Empire for the force of Protestantism in his day. He had some horrifying moral faults as do all.
