Napoleon was a late comer to the war. All the glamorous jobs in the artillery arm were already taken. Napoleon's success as a military leader actually came from his genius at these mundane organizational tasks. There isn't much glory in logistics, but napoleon was well suited to this type of work. His forceful personality was useful in prying every spare cannon and ounce of gunpowder out of miserly supply officer s and local garrison commanders. The army of the alps was an afterthought of an afterthought.
