The grid code itself is this translationally invariant periodic code. And it occurs in different modules. So the grid cells form different collections of cells that have certain properties, confined to these cells. For instance, one group of cells will have a certain period; another group of cells has another period. When you actually look at the filing fields spread out on a on a 2D environment, you'll see that they overlap in such a way.
