The Martyr Made Podcast

CHAPTER

The Protests in Newark, NJ

On July 13, 1967, two Newark patrol cops were cruising the city when a taxi started tailgating them. The black driver threw a haymaker sucker punch at one of the cops and busted up his mount. SDS cadre sprang into action after word began to circulate that a black man had been violently arrested by white cops. Protesters gathered outside the station house and they started throwing rocks in bricks at the police station. A block away a garbage can was thrown through the window of a liquor store; other nearby businesses were looted.
