By late 1991, the mad Chester sound had been fully mainstreamed. U2 picked up on the sound for their 1991 album Octong Baby. The band that truly signaled a sea change was a different, more decadent London quartet called Swade. Their 1992 debut single, The Drowners, only reached number 49 in the UK but kicked off a frenzy in the British music press.
