The Different Types of Acids

When people hear the word acid, maybe this is just me, I picture big vat of a liquid that basically dissolves stuff. But chemically speaking, what makes something an acid and what do they all share in common when you see that word in an ingredient? So for example, the different polyhydroxy acids, there's alpha hydroxy acids, there are beta hydroxy acids. An AHA is alpha hydroxy acid. That is a glycolic acid. Those are your AHA. And then BHA is salicylic acid. You see it in like the Neutrogena oil free acne wash. It's a really popular formulation in a ton of over the counter
