The Importance of Playing by the Rules

A lot of the stuff that Donald Trump did about how to pay for his wall and all the rest, he got to play by the rules. And one of the great things about playing by the rules is the rules require buy in from the American people. But we live in a country now where we think that consulting polls and focus groups might as well be sort of checking with the oracle or the augers to figure out what the divine popular will is. When you oppose everything from above like a king, you reinforce the idea that we don't live by the consent of the governed with buy-in from the governed. We become subjects rather than citizens.
