Anxious people tend to suppress and then erupt, but the eruption tends to be in an effort to connect. The fearful avoidance leans on their more avoidant parts at the point of trigger. And that's when they pull away and have a big defensive and protective response. So what we wouldn't want to be doing here is making them feel bad for needing space. Find the middle ground between compassion and firm boundaries.
