The Different Constructions of Self in Different Cultures
In the West we have this idea of very atomized, individual, impermeable self. In some other cultures there's more of a sense that the self can be a permeable thing which sits within a wider network. And so the sense of a self which is constantly responding to and in relationship with other beings - not just human but also pigeons or your pet dog.
