The former PM had a core of steel, says Tony. He was surrounded even at that time by hangers on. His public image was very much as sculpted by the satirist spitting image. More people talk about him with quite a lot of reverence for people who worked with him. But I can see why it is desirable to skulk around in the background and never be in charge - because once you come off this day then some people may desire it.
