The East India Company represents something of a starting place, says Satnam. The most important about India to the British was the fact that it was bloody rich. Britain had a nice little wool trade in East Anglia and Oxfordshire but was not you know a big player like these other countries were. Then it captured the Mughal Empire which was making a quarter of the world's goods.
