Is Emotional Intelligence a Corporate Control?
Adam Sobel: I thought your article in the New Yorker critiquing emotional intelligence was ingenious. This idea has been popular now for a quarter century and I've had lots of concerns about the way that it's talked about and used in workplaces. Never, never had I seen it talked about in this way as corporate control. It seems to me that if you can convince your employees to control themselves, to control their emotions, then one thing it does is completely represses any sort of resentment they might have toward the conditions in which they have to work.
