Odont: The bank of england had an enormous advantage at that time because they had the most advanced methods of communication. They were allowing all these colonies to get on standard, as long as they would use gold anyway. So leading up to world war one, the bank had about 30 % gold cover of its sterling pound. And then it exasperated it, because they needed to make more inflation in order to finance the war.
