There's this enormous middle ground between what we might uncharitably call evolutionary dead ends, like homo neleti and archaic homosapians. We've grown used to incorporating first neandertalls and now denisovins into our family tree. Interbreeding between groups followed by periods of isolation lasting pto a million years has been the rule rather than the exception.
