The Transition to the Enlightenment
This is an era of transition. When we stop thinking about mechanics and artisans as being simply in the same category with slaves, that's when slavery becomes a problem. In the hands of 18th century Enlightenment thinkers, commerce becomes something noble. Even Samuel Johnson will say, you know, there's hardly a more innocent way to lead your life than in making money.
