Is There a Separation Between Control and Surveillance?
control inequality and surveillance are intimately related to one another in every possible way. Control is the design of technologies to control their users rather than to be controlled by their users so for example you can't choose to install third-party apps on your iPhone. This spreads out into things like spare parts where the parts for your car engine increasingly use chips that allow them to detect whether they've been installed by first-party mechanics or third-party mechanics. When the Chinese government orders Apple to block all VPNs that it can't spy on then you can't install a VPN that hasn't been approved by Apple.
