The Importance of Taiwan in China
Taiwan is strategically important to China, but it also represents a reproach to the Communist government of Beijing. In some ways, although it's a relatively small population compared to the mainland, Taiwan has made a great success of democracy. So in some ways, though they wouldn't admit this, Taiwan is a kind of standing approach to the idea that Chinese people can't make a success ofdemocracy. They obviously can and have in Taiwan. That I think is at the root of it.
