In 87 BC, the people of Rome did themselves no favors by electing co-consuls Nius Octavius and Sola Partisan. Lucius Cornelius Cina saw an alliance with Marius as an advantageous way to box out Sola's allies. When Marius crossed the short span of the Mediterranean back into Italy at the head of a loyal army, Cina formally joined him.
