Dickie's Skull

The skull of Burton Agnes Hall was found on a farm in the late 1800s. It is said to have been stolen twice but both times it was returned voluntarily after causing so much noise and disturbance that thieves were scared off. The ghostly visage known as 'Dickie' watches over the land with a keen eye. Dickie's greatest claim to fame came when he sank a bridge during an attempt to build a rail line through his land. A ballad written by Samuel Lacock chronicled this incident throughout July 1863. In the 20th century, stories about Dickie disappeared until at some point in the 1980s following several owners.
