The Rise and Fall of the Praetorian Guard

During the reign of Augustus, the Guard were stationed in and around Rome. The Praetorian became a political force, as well as a military one. They guarded the Imperial family while they slept. Tiberius really gave them a glimpse of the apple when he decided to eschew Augustus' policy of keeping the troops scattered by placing them in a single barrack just outside Italy.
