Having a good idea of how an NFCC works is can be a very good tool in any of these techniques. In English if I'm feeling a little literary I can say things like this I don't understand and you know that I mean this is the direct object because of their syntax of the rest. So there doesn't have to be clefting and mood dancing going on there. It can be more straightforward especially when the semantics of the verb make it clear inanimate objects don't understand people. Some languages are a little uncomfortable with agent direct objects in the first place and might by preference switch to passive for that situation anyway.
