Is Augustine Responding to the Christian Thing?

Augustine was responding to earlier Christian thinkers like Justin and then Irenaeus and then Tertullian who had, they were interacting with their ideological opponents. And so Augustine undertakes to argue that we can't distinguish which member of the Trinity we're dealing with.
