Is the First World War a Prelude to the Second World War?
Walter: The First World War was only recently started to sort of re-enter German consciousness. Maybe because it's all a little bit more complicated, and the good and the bad aren't quite as sharp as with the Second World War. Marta: I can't really say, except that maybe this feeling of guilt and shame and responsibility coming out of World War II is so powerfulthat any historical or moral dealings with World War I sort of pale next to that.
