Introduction
Muriel Marvini and her friend Agnes Lillard were evacuated from the cruise ship Princeton after a fire broke out in the engine room. The captain had ordered all passengers to evacuate onto the promenade deck as a precaution, but hadn't said anything about dressing warmly. Muriel looks out at the sea, it's dark and still, considerably calmer than the rough waters that force so many passengers to skip dinner just a few hours ago. She can't wait to be back in her warm bed.
