Jeffrey Toobin: Plants might not morally matter for their own sakes, but who cares? They still morally matter alot. We literally depend on them in order to existd be happy and flourish in life. Even if these are all forms of extrinsic or instrumental moral significance, they still are a what of moral significance. So that would be one route, even from a sentientist view, to at least assigning non zero moral significance to plant. And then with respect to normantife uncertainty, also, i think we should keep an open mind about which theory of moral status is true.
